Rick Barry was Larry Bird before Larry Bird.
Bird was a sweet passing, high-scoring small forward who
excelled in the NBA and ABA and had his two best seasons eight seasons apart.
Barry got MVP votes in eight different seasons. He was NBA
Finals MVP in 1974-1975 when his Golden State Warriors swept the favored
Washington Bullets. He had a PER over 22.0 in six seasons. He topped 10.0 In
win shares in six seasons and above 9.5 in two other seasons.
Barry’s best season in my system was 1974-1975 when the
Warriors won the title. His second best was 1966-1967 when the Warriors lost to
Wilt Chamberlain’s 76ers in the NBA Finals. Barry was phenomenal in the series,
scoring at least 30 points in each game, 55 in one, and averaging 40.8 points
per game.
Barry would rank higher if he hadn’t had to sit out the 1967-1968 season as he waited to switch from the NBA to the ABA. When he finally did take the floor, his Oakland Oaks were wiping out the ABA. Barry was averaging 34 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game and the Oaks won 30 of the 35 Barry played in before a knee injury wiped out his season. The Oaks were so stacked, they went on to win the ABA title without Barry.
