Marques is another somewhat forgotten star from the early
1980s Milwaukee Bucks teams that just didn’t have enough to get past the Boston
Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers.
Johnson was the No. 3 overall pick in the 1977 NBA draft out
of UCLA (behind Kent Benson and Otis Birdsong) and right away was a poor man’s
version of Dr. J and Larry Bird. He made four All-Star games in his first seven
seasons, averaging as many as 25.6 points and 10.6 rebounds. But just like the Bucks
were never quite as good as the Celtics and 76ers, Johnson was never as good as
those two small forwards.
After the 1983-1984 season, Johnson was traded in a package of players for a group that included Terry Cummings (No. 99 on the top 100 list). The Clippers did a lot of losing but Johnson made another All-Star game in 1985-1986 when he was 29. The next season though, Johnson suffered a neck injury, which ended his season after 10 games. He sat out two more seasons before trying a comeback in 1989-1990. That lasted just 10 games as well.

If Johnson had stayed on the trajectory he was in in
Milwaukee, he might have finished in the top 50.
