Paul Gasol is kind of the forgotten star of the 2009 and
2010 NBA champions.
Kobe Bryant won three NBA titles with Shaquille O’Neal.
After Shaq left for Miami, the Lakers were treading water until acquiring Gasol
in 2007-2008. With Gasol playing the low post in the Lakers’ triple-post set,
L.A. made it to three straight NBA Finals. The Lakers don’t make any of those
without Gasol.
His best season in my system was the 2009-2010 when he was
essentially as important to the Lakers as Bryant. In the playoffs, he had a
Player Efficiency Rating of 24.04 to Bryant’s 24.71. Bryant earned 3.65 win
shares in the playoffs, but Gasol led all of the playoffs with 4.25. Gasol also
topped the Lakers in playoff box +/- and all of the playoffs in VORP.
Gasol has been picked for six all-star games with three
different franchises. He’s had PERs above 20 in 12 different seasons and five
seasons above 10.0 win shares. He’s continued to play efficiently even into his
late 30s, cranking out out PERs of at least 18.9 over the last five seasons (since
turning 33) and never once recording a negative +/- or VORP. He actually aged
much better than Bryant or O’Neal.
