Wes Unseld checks off a lot of boxes for a great player –
Rookie of the Year, regular season MVP, NBA champion, NBA Finals MVP.
Even with all that, Unseld’s best season score was nowhere
near the 100 best. Even though he was a strong rebounder, passer and shot over
50 percent for his career, Unseld was never a big scorer or shot blocker. His
career high for PER was just 18.1, which hurt his advanced statistics. Instead,
it was his year-in, year-out consistency for a long string of winning teams
that earned him a spot in the Top 100.
Unseld played his entire career for the Baltimore/Washington
Bullets and led them to the playoffs in 12 out of his 13 seasons. The Bullets
made four NBA Finals and compiled a curious record. They were swept three of
the four Finals – by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1971, the Golden State Warriors in
1975 and the Seattle SuperSonics in 1979. The Bullets one title came in
1977-1978 when Washington rallied from 3-2 down to beat Seattle. Bobby
Dandridge was announced as the Finals MVP, but it was later changed to Unseld. It
was that award that made 1977-1978 Unseld’s greatest season.
