Bernard King was a scoring machine at small forward for the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, New Jersey Nets and Washington Bullets whose time at the top of the NBA was cut short by knee injuries.
King was the seventh overall pick by the Nets in the 1977 draft – the draft where Kent Benson went No. 1 overall to the Milwaukee Bucks. King was a star from the start, averaging 24.2 points per game and a career-high 9.5 rebounds his rookie season.
He peaked in 1984-1985, leading the NBA in scoring, averaging 32.9 points. He suffered a knee injury though about two-thirds of the way through the season and, except for 1989-1990, never approached that level again.
Because he missed the playoffs in 1984-1985, his best season in this system was 1983-1984, when he led the Knicks to an epic seven-game second round battle against the Celtics. Boston won despite King averaging 29.1 points over the series. King grabbed the final spot in the Top 100 because of that one great year.
The knee injuries and the fact that King played on few great teams over his career hurt his standing. His teams advanced to the playoffs just five times and never made it beyond the second round.
