Terry Porter isn’t a player you’d originally peg as one of
the top 100 players ever in pro basketball.
He made just two all-star games. He got MVP votes in just
one season. He played in two NBA Finals, losing both. He spent the second half
of his NBA career as a trusted reserve, driving down his career averages.
In Porter’s favor is the fact that he was a key contributor
to 16 playoff teams and was at his peak when his Portland Trailblazers made the
finals in two out of three seasons. In those three seasons, he twice had PERs
above 20 – a solid accomplishment for a pass-first point guard - and had more
than 10 win shares in all three.
By 1993-1994, Porter was no longer a full-time starter, but he
transitioned well to a backup role and continued to win with the Timberwolves,
Heat and Spurs. It’s the extra winning seasons at the end of his career that
drove up his career score enough to land in the top 100.
