Dwyane Wade had the ability – and at times was asked – to be
the leading man on an NBA team, but it was his time as a sidekick that pushed
him into the top 30.
Wade has played in five NBA Finals, winning three. The first
was with Shaquille O’Neal and the final four were with LeBron James. He clearly
was a star each of the years he went to the finals. He had PERs of 27.6, 25.6,
26.3, 24 and 22 in those seasons. He just wasn’t the No. 1 option.
His top season is the 2005-2006 year with Shaq where Wade
led the NBA in playoff Box +/- and VORP, while leading the Heat over the
favored Dirk Nowitzki Dallas Maverics. It was Wade and not Shaq that was named NBA
Finals MVP. The Mavericks won the first two games in the series with Wade scoring
51 in those games. He exploded all over the Mavericks in the next four, scoring
42, 36, 43 and 36 points.
His second best season was when James joined him in
2010-2011. That started a four-year run of NBA Finals for the two.
Without Shaq and LeBron, Wade still was great. In 2008-2009,
Wade led the league in scoring with 30.2 points per game on a team whose second
best player, Shawn Marion, averaged 12 per game. Wade also became the rare NBA
player to top 30.0 PER in a season with a 30.4. Only 10 players have reached that
mark a total of 20 times. But because the 2008-2009 Heat lost in the first
round of the playoffs, that season ends up as Wade’s third best.
Wade ended up with four seasons above 300 in my system and
two more above 290. Wade’s game clearly began to slip in 2013-2014 and he’s
been a negative Box +/- player the past three seasons. As of right now, he’s
not under contract for 2018-2019. Even if he’s done, he’s done enough to be top
30.
