Dennis Johnson was a defensive stopper with a knack for upping his offensive game in the playoffs and a key piece on three NBA title teams.
Johnson was a solid regular season player, averaging 14.1 points over 14 seasons. He increased that to 17.3 points per game in the playoffs and was so good in the 1978-1979 playoffs that he won NBA Finals MVP. Johnson at all times was a winner. His teams missed the playoffs one time, his rookie year with Seattle and even that year the Sonics were 39-42. He had a career winning percentage of 65.7 percent in the regular season and 58.3 percent in the playoffs.
For as great as Larry Bird and the early 1980s Celtics teams
were, management saw that the Celtics struggled with scoring guards, particularly
Philadelphia’s Andrew Toney, so Boston brought in Johnson to shore up that weakness
and it led to two more NBA titles.
I actually thought Johnson would rank higher, but he had relatively low advanced
stats across the board. It’s his 13 years as a solid contributor for consistent
title contenders that earned him a spot in the rankings.
