Kevin McHale may have had the greatest low post game ever.
The up-and-under, the scoop, the baby hook, the fadeaway. There
are all kinds of McHale highlight videos on YouTube. Horace Grant, No. 45 on
this list, called him unguardable. His career 55.4 field goal percentage ranks
16th all-time. He was one of the rare players whose field goal
percentage went up in the playoffs when you are facing better competition. His
56.1 percent postseason mark is 9th all-time.
McHale played on 13 playoff teams and three NBA champions. His
teams won 69 percent of their regular season games and 58 percent of their
playoff games. He topped 10.0 win shares in a season seven straight years. He
has the reputation of a top 25 player, but there were a few things that kept
him from finishing higher.
·
The Celtics were Larry Bird’s team for most of his career. McHale
was really only the No. 1 option beginning in 1986-1987. MVP voters treated
McHale that way. He only got MVP votes in three seasons.
·
Although he was a great scorer and shot blocker, he got
relatively few rebounds for a 6-10 player, averaging 7.3 per game, and just 1.7
assists. That kept his PER from being better. He had just five seasons above
21.0 and his career 20.0 PER ranks 73rd, below players such as
Carmelo Anthony, Elton Brand and Brook Lopez.
·
He played just 13 NBA seasons, costing him some career points
that could have pushed him farther up the list.
