Fun fact. Terry Cummings is the only player in the top 100
that I’ve played against. Cummings was an ordained Pentecostal Minister and would
make swings through areas during the offseason. One of those years he was preaching
in Rockford, Illinois, and stopped in at the YMCA to play pickup basketball.
Imagine an NBA star – and he was a star in the 1980s – just showing up at your YMCA to get in a few games. I was one of a couple dozen players who got in a game against Terry, whose team, not so surprisingly went undefeated.

Cummings was a can’t miss prospect out of DePaul. The Los
Angeles Clippers drafted him No. 2 in the 1982 draft – just behind James Worthy
and just in front of Dominique Wilkins. Cummings was a star instantly, winning
the Rookie of the Year award and making first team all-NBA for an awful
Clippers team. After his second season, Cummings was traded to Milwaukee where
he would be the centerpiece of a solid playoff team that never had enough
firepower to get past Boston or Detroit.
Despite the fact that he was a two-time All Star and got MVP
votes in four seasons, Cummings was never regarded as one of the league’s
greats. His first year in Milwaukee, 1984-1985, was his best. He was in the top
10 for both PER and Win Shares and finished fifth in the MVP voting. For most
of the rest of his 20s, he was a solid scoring option and rebounder who
adjusted well to a reserve role in the 1990s. That kept him in the league until
he was 38. It is his solid play for mostly winning teams – his team qualified
for the playoffs 13 times – for nearly two decades that earned him a spot in
this ranking.
