Hal Greer is considered the third best guard of the 1960s, behind Jerry West and Oscar Robertson.
He’s not generally talked about much today, but Greer’s accomplishments still loom large in West Virginia, where he was raised and went to college, and in Philadelphia, where he teamed up with Chet Walker and Wilt Chamberlain to power the 76ers to their first NBA title in 1966-1967.
When he retired, Greer was the all-time leader in games played and in the top 10 in points and field goals. He remains the 76ers’ franchise record holder for points, field goals, games played and minutes.
It’s his endurance and winning play that powered Greer into
the top 100. Greer played at least 68 games in every season except his last. He
played in 80 or more nine times out of 15 seasons. His teams qualified for the
playoffs 13 times. He was the leading scorer in the playoffs for the 1966-1967
NBA champions, averaging 27.7 points per game over 15 games. It wasn’t an
anomaly. He averaged 24.6 points in the 1964-1965 playoffs and 25.8 in the 1967-1968
playoffs.
Greer could be counted on to be there every game and step up in the bigger
games. The 76ers put up a statue of Greer at their training facility in 2017.
