The only question about Steph Curry’s greatness is how
great?
He hasn’t even finished 10 seasons and he’s No. 42 on my
list. Will he eventually be top 25? Barring catastrophic injury, yes. Top 20?
Yes. Top 15? Maybe. Top 10? Possibly.
Curry already has two seasons above 400 points in my system.
Only eight players have ever topped 400 in a season twice. He ranks 13th
in peak season rankings and 12th in five-year rankings. He’s already
68th in the 10-year rankings and he’s only completed nine seasons.
If he just continues to churn out average – for him seasons – he’ll zoom up both
the 10-year and career rankings.
Curry already would be top 40 if not for the ankle injuries
that derailed his third year in the NBA and started to crop up again last
season. This system leans heavily towards winning so Curry didn’t get much from
his first three years when his Warriors didn’t qualify. But Golden State has made
four straight NBA Finals, winning three, and seems poised for several more
considering its core players, Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond
Green, get along and don’t appear eager to try to win somewhere else. The team
now is a magnet for players who are ring shopping, the latest being DeMarcus
Cousins.
So if the ankles hold up, he’s going to approach the numbers
of any guard not named Michael Jordan.
If there’s a knock on Curry to this point, it would be that
his playoff performance hasn’t quite lived up to his regular season
performance. Here are the PERs and Box +/- of Curry’s six playoff years versus
the regular season.

In only one of his six trips to the playoffs, did Curry play better in the playoffs than he did during the regular season. In Golden State’s three NBA title runs, none of the NBA Finals MVPs – which typically goes to the champion’s star player – have gone to Curry. Andre Iguodala won the first and Durant the last two. It’s the lack of the bonus points for those NBA Finals MVPs that could keep him out of my top 10. Considering how stacked Golden State appears to be, Curry will have more chances to fill in that missing part of his resume.
