Cliff Hagan has a very interesting bio.
·
He was the first player to play in both an NBA and ABA all-star
game.
·
He won an NCAA title (1951) and NBA title (1958).
·
He was the first player from the University of Kentucky inducted
into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.
He also looms large in the history of the Boston Celtics.
After graduating from Kentucky, Hagan was drafted by the Boston Celtics, but
first he served two years in the U.S. Air Force. After his discharge and before
he ever suited up for Boston, the Celtics traded Hagan and easy Ed Macauley to
the St. Louis Hawks for the draft rights to Bill Russell.
That didn’t seem to be that big of a deal in 1957-1958 when
Hagan and Bob Pettit led the Hawks to the NBA title, beating Russell and the
Celtics in the finals, 4-2. In the finals, Hagan used his signature hook shot
to score 151 points in six games – a 25.2 points per game average.
That would be Hagan’s only title, though, and Russell would
end up winning 11 with Boston.
Still, Hagan would carve out a spot for himself in the top 50.
He would top 20.0 in PER seven times in 12 full seasons and 10.0 in win shares
four times. In the playoffs, he led the NBA in PER in both 1957-1958 and
1958-1959 and in win shares in 1957-1958. His teams won 55 percent of their
regular season games and 49 percent of their postseason games. Considering he
didn’t come to the NBA until he was 25, he likely would rank higher if not for
the years lost to the military.
