Elvin Hayes would, by traditional numbers, rank much
higher.
He was the No. 1 overall draft pick by the San Diego Rockets
after a storied career at Houston and went on to become a 12-time all-star. He
played in three NBA Finals, winning one in 1978. He won one scoring title and
two rebounding titles in the regular season and three times was the top
rebounder in the playoffs. He received MVP votes in seven seasons. He was a
workhorse, playing in at least 80 games in all 16 of his NBA seasons. He led
the league in minutes four times. He still ranks fourth all-time in total
rebounds.
The advanced stats though aren’t nearly as positive. Hayes
was an inefficient scorer for a big man. “The Big E” had a career shooting percentage
of just 45.2 percent. For all the points, rebounds and blocked shots, he never
had a single regular season with a PER above 20. Although he ranks well in Win
Shares, three seasons above 10.0, he never had a Box +/- above 4.0 or a VORP above
4.6.
Because of this, Hayes never had a single season score above 300. Instead, it is his year-in, year-out consistency that landed him a spot, although it was much lower than I anticipated, in the top 100.
