Bobby Jones averaged 12.1 points and 6.1 rebounds for his
career, yet in my system he’s ranked above rebounding stalwarts such as Dwight
Howard, scoring kings such as Tracy McGrady or passing wizards like Isiah
Thomas. Why? Because there were few bigger winners.
Jones played 12 seasons in the ABA and NBA and his Denver
Rockets and Philadelphia 76ers made the playoffs every year. He played in four
ABA or NBA finals, including being a key cog on the 1982-1983 76ers of Moses
Malone and Dr. J that remains on the short list of greatest teams in basketball
history. That’s a lot of playoff bonus points each year.
In all, Jones won 70 percent of the regular season games he
played in and 59 percent of the playoff games.
Jones was a winner because he was one of the best defenders
in NBA history and most efficient scorers. Jones was named to an ABA or NBA
all-defensive team 11 times in 12 years. He led the ABA twice and NBA once in
field goal percentage, a remarkable stat for a small forward. Jones simply didn’t
take bad shots. He hit open jump shots, was a great finisher on the break and in
constant motion. His 57 percent career field goal percentage ranks 13th
all-time, best ever for a small forward, and above such low-post experts as
Kevin McHale and Charles Barkley.
His career PER of 18.2 is relatively low for a top-50 player
and he only had three seasons of above 10.0 in win shares. He excelled in
boxscore +/- though. Three times he led the ABA in defensive boxscore +/- and his
career box +/- of 4.77 ranks 23rd all-time, ahead of Scottie Pippen,
Jason Kidd and Kobe Bryant.
Jones still hasn’t been inducted into the basketball hall of
fame – Google Bobby Jones and Hall of Fame and you’ll find him on several “best
players not in the hall of fame" lists – but eventually he will be because in
the end, winning matters.
