Dennis Rodman had one of the all-time great nicknames – “The
Worm.”
He started out as an all-out hustling underdog just trying to stick in the NBA.
He didn’t until he was 25. Then he morphed into as much a celebrity as he was a
player.
He was undoubtedly a winner. He played only on one losing team in the NBA, a brief stint on Dallas his final season. He was a member of five NBA title teams – the Detroit Pistons Bad Boys and then the second set of triplicate titleists in Chicago when he was specifically brought in to fill the void on Michael Jordan’s Bulls left by the departure of Horace Grant.
Rodman originally was a defensive stopper who then developed into a rebounding specialist. He won seven straight rebounding titles. He ended up averaging nearly twice as many rebounds as he did points. Despite the fact he averaged more than 10 points per game just once, Rodman now is routinely ranked as one of the all-time best power forwards. An ESPN expert ranking placed him 10th. Ranker.com has Rodman seventh.
In this system, even though it specifically is tilted towards winners, Rodman doesn’t score that well. Even with all the rebounds and a solid career shooting percentage of 52.1, Rodman never had a PER of more than 17.4 in any single season. He only had one season with more than 10 win shares and never had a Box +/- above 5.0.
He actually typically performed worse in the playoffs. Still, he more than earned his 2011 induction into the Hall of Fame by being a key cog on 11 playoff teams and all those title teams.
