Alonzo Mourning was a beast who had trouble remaining
healthy enough to stay on the court.
Mourning only played as many as 70 games six times in a
15-year career. He missed one season entirely because of kidney disease. He fought
his way back but only got backup minutes for the rest of his career.
Mourning was the second overall pick in the 1992 draft –
behind Shaquille O’Neal and Shaq overshadowed Mourning for much of his career.
Mourning was a strong scorer – six seasons of more than 20 points per game – a solid
rebounder – four seasons over 10 boards per game – and an outstanding shot
blocker. Mourning led the league in blocked shots per game twice and averaged
more than three blocks per game four times. That skill didn’t diminish with
age. When he was 35 and 36 years old, he averaged 2.7 and 2.3 blocks per game
in just 20 minutes of playing time.
He had strong PERs – above 20 his first nine years in the
league – but all the missed games hurt him in win shares. He only had one
season above 10.0.
Mourning also missed out on valuable points because his
teams only advanced out of the first round of the playoffs five times. Only
once in those five years did he have a PER above 20.0. His one NBA title came
in 2005-2006 when he was a backup to O’Neal in Miami. After a solid season off the
bench (7.8 points per game, 5.5 rebounds and 2.7 blocks), Mourning was an
afterthought in the playoffs. He averaged just 10.8 minutes in the 21-game
title run.
